The Aceh Tsunami Museum will be built in the city of Banda Aceh approximately 1 km from Masjid Raya Banda Aceh. The functions of the Aceh Tsunami Museum are:

  1. As a historical object, where the tsunami museum will be a center for research and learning about the tsunami disaster.
  2. As a symbol of the strength of the people of Aceh in the face of the tsunami disaster.
  3. As an inheritance to future generations in Aceh in the form of a message that there has been a tsunami in its area.

At the end of 2004, or precisely on December 26, 2004 at 07.59 Aceh land was rocked by an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale, shortly followed by a surging torrent of water or better known as a tsunami rolling anything in front of it. It is estimated that water came from the coast to Meulaboh 148 KM from the epicenter, continuing to Teunom, Calang, Lhoksemawe, Sigli and Banda Aceh. The disaster has devastated settlements in both villages and towns, and it is thought that the earthquake and tsunami disaster has killed more than 200,000 people.
