Rely on God: Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Proverbs 29:25
The Bible constantly teaches us the difference between fearing men and fearing God. The spiritual gift of fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability, for this gift we feel aversion to evil and we seek good ("Do to no one what you yourself hate" Tobit 4:15) and meekness with all our heart: "Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil" Proverbs 3:7.
When the fear of God grows and is perfected in the heart of man, the gifts of wisdom, discernment, and understanding arise, and thus we understand what the trust in God is: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" Proverbs 9:10.
But the fear of men is something completely different, this fear arises when we stop serving the Lord with our hearts, and we are only interested in giving a good impression to others, especially with those who are more powerful than us. This form of fear is the source of especially serious sins.
This sin was denounced numerous times by the most important prophets, especially when the kings of Judah and Israel gave themselves up to idolatry and trusted more in military alliances than in the God of Moses and Jacob. The fools reject totally the fear and the trust in God and only put their faith in the apparent goods.
The Book of Proverbs with a beautiful counsel that invites us to rely on God, tells us that the fear of men is like a snake, like something that can harm us at the most unexpected moment, with these words expresses the book the spiritual teaching: "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe" Proverbs 29:25.
The Lord is our shield and our rock and we should not fear anyone if we follow God's ways, this is the fundamental teaching of this wise proverb.
