The unacceptable Trump plan for elephants

Trump has just changed the law without anyone noticing - AGAIN - to let bloodthirsty American hunters kill elephants in Africa and bring their heads home as trophies!

He has tried to do it before - but, after enormous public pressure, including an Avaaz campaign of 2 million signatures, Trump put his unacceptable plan "under review".

Now, months later, he is trying to carry it out secretly.

We can not let him get away with it. Even people to the right of Trump are facing him for this.

To President Trump, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and conservation authorities around the world:

Elephants face extinction - this is no time to leave them unprotected. The hunting of trophies leads to the killing of elephants, increases the demand for parts of their bodies and projects a double standard that makes it more difficult to stop poaching. The proposed case by case standard is arbitrary and insufficient to protect this incredible species. We demand that you open a public consultation on this matter and do everything you can to prohibit any importation of elephant trophies to the United States.

Under pressure, Trump himself described this policy as a "circus of horrors" only a few months ago. But, now that the scandal has passed and the public eye is elsewhere, he is leaving elephant killers as his son, who, notoriously, shot and mutilated an elephant, bringing home parts of his body as memories - although poaching in search of ivory threatens to annihilate these incredible creatures.

Representatives of Trump say they will only lift the ban on imports of trophies "on a case-by-case basis" but experts say it is almost impossible to stop poaching as wealthy Americans continue to shoot the elephants for fun. The only way to save elephants from extinction is to stop killing them and thus reduce the demand for parts of their body.

When Trump tried to do this for months, the public prevented it. We can achieve it again. We are going to create a gigantic appeal to the USA. to abandon this unacceptable plan and then to work with Trump's trusted people to guarantee our victory.
