Trump's beginning?
The Trump family made its fortune in the Northwest, taking care of the holistic needs of miners (for food, drink, housing, and sex). Donald Trump's grandfather was rather sickly, so instead of joining his siblings in the vineyards of Bavaria, he learned to cut hair, then ran off to New York City, then to Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle, where he established his first restaurant-hotel-brothel. After a stint in a mining town in the Cascades (where he was elected Justice of the Peace!), he was off to the Yukon to expand on his fortune, before returning to Seattle, then Germany, then New York.
So what was the Trump family's first real estate acquisition? On the so-called Pine Lake Plateau. Pine Lake is a body of water in Sammamish, Washington, now the richest city per capita in America of at least 65,000 population. I have swum in the lake -- the park is nice. The city mostly consists of Microsoft employees, about a third of the city being Asian. But Frederick Trump's sister sold that property in 1900 for $100. Can't win them all. Now you know the rest of the story.
