Going inside Dover Castle

Yesterday I took you all to visit the Dover Castle in UK, introducing the history and walking around the castle grounds and rooftop. Today, I will take you to three other parts of the castle.

The first part is the inside of the castle. If you remember yesterday I said King Henry II built the Great Tower here in the 12th century, this is where we will go first.

Since this was back in the 12th century, the inside isn't very lavish like you would expect for a modern day castle. The interior retains its raw decor, and stone walls. The only decoration inside are the drapes hanging on the wall, I believe they are the coat of arms for the King. A long table was laid out in one of the rooms. That is really fit for a king. It's probably where he used to have dinner.

And I'm pretty sure I'm right about that. As a bit further along, I found a mock up kitchen. The setup is primitive, they use logs to make the fire, and all the pots and saucepan hang above the fire.

The pantry is next to the kitchen area. This is where they store the food, including the meat. The meat you see here is of course not real, it just gives you an idea of what it looked like back in those days. Although the room was quite cool, I'm still not sure how long the meat can last here back in thouse days. It makes you wonder how we would cope without a fridge today.

Religion forms a very big part in English history and you will always find a church or chapel of some sort in the big buildings. The chapel at Dover Castle is not very large but has a very impressive stained glass window pane. When the light flushes through the colourful glass panes, it reflects on the stone walls creating a beautiful print.

The final place I want to introduce is the underground hospital. During the Second World War, Dover Castle played a very important role due to its location. During the Napolean War in the early 19th century, 7 tunnels were dug underground and used as barracks. Later on during the Second World War, the tunnels were converted to various purposes. One was as an undergroud hospital to care for soldiers when they were injured in battle across the channel. It was very interesting to walk down the tunnels and find a hospital deep underground. Sadly, it was quite difficult to take good photos inside and all my came our really bad, that's why I can't show you any,

If you ever have a chance to go to Dover Castle, you must remember to do this tour. You will go through this entrance, down the tunnels, see the underground hospital and barrack, and come back out another end of the tunnel of the other side of the castle. It is very fascinating and highly recommended,
