Muggia - An unknown pearl near Trieste

Muggia is a little town in the really extreme east of Italy , part of Province of Trieste, practically on the border with Slovenia and it is the only town in Italy on the Istria peninsula.

The town is plenty of Venetian history with Slavic influence and has preserved till nowadays the Old Muggia town with the restored castle and the little, but very old church Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, situated in the Archaeological Park of Old Muggia and the Duomo of Muggia in the center square of the town.

But the really nice and romantic part of Muggia which should be discovered is the old fishing port, which is colorful and quite, except at the time of the Carnival of Muggia (Carneval de Muja), a very important and old local tradition. The amazing part are also the small lanes that lead from the castle and the main square to the fishing port.

Nearby the Muggia town (3 km) there is also a successful reconversion of an old shipyard, which is acting as a modern marina village, called Porto San Rocco and there are nice pebble beaches all around Muggia.
