What Does Being Human Mean To You? TSU Bi-Weekly Question
I've often questioned this human existence. I've spent many a moment pondering the meaning of life. Wondering what it's all about. Why we are here, what is our purpose on this planet?
I've often wondered if our true heritage is alien to this planet. Some form of bacteria from the outskirts of the universe that found its way to earth on an asteroid. Or perhaps our ancients escaped from another planet, one that they destroyed and then sought out Earth as the alternative. Or perhaps Mars was a more habitable planet many aeons ago, one that was home to human like figures... perhaps they destroyed it or perhaps back then the sun was stronger and Mars was more like earth than the barren desert we know today. Perhaps they fled to Earth and those survivors bred with the closest resembling animals to them in order to survive here? There's certainly a few holes in the theory of evolution.
One thing is for sure, however we evolved into what we are today, we are never going to fully know.
Since the dawn of time many philosophers have questioned our existence and our essence. Trying to make sense of who we are and why we are here.
Perhaps this is all a simulation. There are certainly many signs that would indicate it. If you look at the Golden Ratio and Pi the sequences that make up the building blocks of life. When you compare that with how a computer program works and apply mathematical logic to our existence, the similarities are mind blowing.
I remember once reading a quote that went something like this:
"You are the universe having a human experience."
These are all interesting theories that try to decipher our origins but they don't answer what it truly means to be human.
So what does being human mean to me?
I've often questioned this. When I look at the world I see two sides of the coin.
In one way I feel so disheartened with the way we humans treat this planet and each other. I feel ashamed to be human when I read of the atrocities that exist in the world. When I hear about bombings and wars, famine, greed and billionaires who have enough money to end world poverty three times over, but would rather lavish themselves with material luxuries to prove to those earning less that they have made it to the top. I feel sick to my stomach when I hear about women and children who have been assaulted, raped and emotionally battered. When I read about murders of holistic doctors, that giant corporations are playing 'god' with our food supply. When I hear of animal abuse and neglect, of nature being destroyed and animals becoming extinct. I feel this and it hurts. It makes me want to denounce my humanity. When I see the bad I would rather be any other animal than a human.
In stark contrast to this there are a number of beautiful things that exist within the realm of humanity that make me love and celebrate all that it means to be human.
Our senses give our brains the ability to process what we see, listen, smell, touch, taste and feel. We are surrounded by so many beautiful natural elements. We are part of an ecosystem that experiences cycles. Not just on this planet but farther afield through the entire universe. We are all vibrational frequencies and when we are attuned to those frequencies we are one.
We have made connections to the stars, our inquisitive minds have us drawing theories up and pondering our existence. We expand our minds and create beautiful music, art and inventions.
Our bodies are these magnificent vessels that absorb so much information. We too experience cycles throughout our lives. The cycle of birth life and death. As a woman, I experience my cycle of life creation.
I feel completely human when I am surrounded by nature. I feel connected and at home. It feels right. I am a child of the earth and when my cycle is complete my body will return to the earth, to provide the nutrients for another cycle of life to begin.
Sharing and showing compassion towards all life on this planet is a wondrous thing that needs to be celebrated. The ability to have community, to share in the joys and love with other humans. When a natural disaster occurs and we all support one another. Lifting spirits by singing, sharing food and clothing. Offering support and comfort. These are all amazing human qualities.
We are living in a time of great shift in consciousness and there has to be balance.
Just like day and night, light and dark, what we perceive as good and evil. We experience ups and downs. We make mistakes and we learn from them.
Are we the universe having a human experience? Possibly. But this human experience is one that I wouldn't change. We have the power to make this world better. We have the power to love one another and be kind. We have the power to chose.
Let's rewild ourselves and rediscover the beauty in being human. Let us love and be love.
Being human to me in essence is;
- Love
- Understanding
- Respect
- Empathy
- Kindness
- Balance
- Connectedness
