Trial By Comics - Contest Entry

in #trialbycomics6 years ago (edited)

Here's my submission for this week's Trial by Comics contest!

POLIS: The Trial of Socrates

A historical graphic novel that examines the events leading up to the trial and execution of Socrates in ancient Athens.

The following is a spread of two pages that I'm particularly proud of. Two armies have just attempted to take the high ground of a hill for a coming battle. The democratic exiles recently landed in the Athenian port to retake the city from the oligarchic puppet government installed by the Spartans. The democrats have beaten the opposing army to the top of the hill.

Now, before the hoplite battle begins, each side sucks up to their favorite god.

It is really interesting to see the script for comic without drawings. Writer from our studio is also making a comic, but he draws rough sketches alongside the script as a reference for artist.

You know, I generally do very rough sketches, either as I'm writing, or after it's done and I'm ready to do a rewrite. Those sketches are mostly for my own understanding though. While I'll try to provide them to the artist, I don't know if they offer more confusion than clarity. :)

Case in point:

Love your work as a fellow comics-phile, keep it going !

This is really interesting, really different. As a writer, I've not thought too much about working in this medium but this has got me interested.

Are there are good online communities you've found for support with this kind of work?

For a while there was a really good group at http://www.digitalwebbing.com - that's where I've found most of the artists I've worked with. Good place to workshop art or writing, and look for collaborators.

But for a while, there was a weekly or bi-weekly tear-down session for comic scripts called The Proving Grounds, run by ComixTribe. They stopped doing it months ago. But I think there are years worth of posts still archived in the forum. I'd recommend checking it out.

Ooh, I need to enter this contest, I think!

Any word on the Kickstarter?

Next Sunday for the Kickstarter.

ah very interesting to see the script pages! As I've been making my own comic for about 5 years, my own script looks nothing like this lol :)

Yeah, there's no real standard format for comic scripts. This is just a format that worked for me.

Of course, if you're really just writing for yourself, that's even more up to your own taste!

Had this novel been translated into our language, it would be selling well here.
