Myanmar to Close Three Refugee Camps Rohingya

The Burmese government has reportedly closed three refugee camps of its Rohingnya in Rakhine City. The closing of the camp is based on the advice given by the Advisory Committee.

The commission, led by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, recommended the Myanmar government in April to develop a comprehensive strategy, to close all refugee camps in Rakhine state. The closure of the three camps is the first step taken by the government of Myanmar.

"Three refugee camps have been shut down in the towns of Kyaukphyu, Pauktaw and Ramree, Thaung Tun," National Security Advisor to the Burmese government said in a statement, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday (2/7).

The first closed camp was a camp in Ramree that housed 55 Kaman Muslim families. The second closed camp is occupied by 65 ethnic Rakhine families. The third closed camp is the largest camp, where the camps in Phauktaw are inhabited by 215 Rohingnya ethnic families.

The closing of this camp was confirmed by the Rakhine City government. "Most of them were transferred to Min That Phar village, while some moved to other villages where they have family," said Rakhine regional government spokesman Min Aung.

He added that authorities gave home to every family back in their area and cash assistance to continue their work.
