The 'orange' economy, that of cultural industries, is increasingly important, and increasingly linked to the development of large cities. According to a 2016 UNESCO report, culture and goods or services directly related to creativity represent 3% of world GDP, and employ 29.5 million people worldwide, more than sectors such as telecommunications or national economies such as Germany.

The revenues of the cultural and creative industries in the world represent US$2.25 trillion, more than the entire automobile industry in Europe, Japan and the United States.

For example, in Guatemala it is estimated to provide more than 700,000 jobs; and in Costa Rica around 2% of GDP. In the opinion of the expert of the Inter-American Development Bank, Duque Márquez, the potential of the orange economy is enormous, since it should create 7% of employment in the Central American region, something that is still very far away. In Latin America, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City are the major poles of this industry, and recently Montevideo and San José de Costa Rica have joined them.
