Spruce : beautiful and graceful

Deciduous plants have a certain beauty. Yet, coniferous plants are also worth noting. One such plant is the spruce. Gardeners and designers should know about it.

Spruce trees can grow up to 50 m tall. Most, however, stay below 30 m. Spruce trees and shrubs share needle-shaped leaves. These leaves stay green for many years. The crown shape is almost like a perfect cone. If growing conditions are poor, the plant may stay small.


Needles range from 0.01 to 0.025 m long. Each needle lives for at least 6 years. Needles grow in a spiral pattern. Each needle sits on its own little pad. One special thing about spruces is their needle color.

It's wrong to think spruces are always green. Needle color changes with the seasons. You can find green, yellow, and even mixed colors. Dark green is the most common.
