Travel Tip: Lower Vitkovice, one of the most impressive Czech technical monuments

in #traveltip7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will certainly please all fans of technology (and heavy industry in particular) as I will show you around an iconic technical monument of the Czech Republic, the Lower Vitkovice Area.

Situated near the center of Ostrava, the third largest city of the Czech Republic, Lower Vitkovice was a large, heavy-industry complex that was fully functioning until September 1998. Four years later, in 2002, the government decided to turn the abandoned complex into a cultural technical monument.

The complex was revitalized and recently opened to public. Visitors of the site have a unique chance to see both the outside and the inside of gigantic industrial premises such as blast furnaces, steel factories, coal mines, enormous gas cylinders, all kinds of heavy machinery, pipeworks and much more.

The complex is dominated by the Bolt Tower, a huge steel-frame look-out tower built on one of the furnaces. Named after the legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (who was a regular competitor at athletic competitions held in the city), the tower offers spectacular views of the area as well as picturesque panoramas of the Beskydy Mountains that are located just outside the city.

Visitors can choose from a variety of tours (depending on how much of the complex they want to see), guided tours in foreign languages are available for an extra fee.

Ostrava was once known as the “Czech Republic’s Iron Heart,” largely because of this huge industrial plant that opened in 1830. The plant housed an ironworks, a coal colliery, and six coke furnaces. It was the only one in Europe that processed iron from start to finish in one location, and it was able to do so simply because the site was so massive. The plant operated until 1998, when it shut down production for good.

Ohh.. I need to go there for some fashion photoshoot :) Definitely

Please do so! Short distance from my house - 30 mins by car, max! Plus you have a bed for a day or two:)....

Such an historic place, the architects did a good job in that tower. so Usain bolt got his name pen down in Czech, a plus to his name

Oh yeah, he absolutely did!

The Vítkovice mining area is located right at the heart of Ostrava. As soon as you enter this town of steel, a fantastic panorama opens up, one comparable to a Hollywood blockbuster’s space-age vision of towns of the future. The view of this labyrinth of iron towers, pipes and conduits creates bizarre forms and leaves a weird and wonderful impression on most. This town of steel will also fill you with a kind of bleak nostalgia.

Nicely said:).....
