Fort Constitution

Gun Mounts

Fort Constitution inside, has these two long berms with raised gun mounts along each wall. Note the center pivot mount and the outer ring for travel for the rear of the canon with pin holes for specific degree stops!

No Sally Port1.jpg
The Fort is on the island of New Castle, New Hampshire, at the mouth of the Piscataqua River estuary. Sally Ports are the protected doorways for troops inside the fort to rally at, and are used as protected entrances and exits into the fort. For Fort Constitution, these are located under the gun berms.

Are you going in? Does that entrance have stairs leading down into buildings? or where does it go? I loved exploring Old Fort Henry in Kingston.

I did
inside many nooks and crannies
but not a lot of light, so images were toough

Those walls look solid. I can imagine being there from the photos.

Wow, that combination of brickwork and stones is interesting, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that done in walls construction (context: I'm a student of history and archaeology, so I'm not just being facetious about that).

What's the yellow stuff? Looks like something growing on it????

the yellow is a type of moss growing.
Pretty common spore around new england, on the brickwork.
I suspect whatever the pH is, determines the types of moss growing.
