Good evening everyone at streemit.
Today I have a story of my trip in Nepal . 1#
The Streets of Kathmandu, Nepal.
Everywhere you turn, it is an assault on one's senses ... a colourful adventure just navigating the bustling, dusty and chaotic streets. Small doorways everywhere lead to courtyards and temples with amazing design and teak carving, often several centuries old.
Sunny and 24 degrees as I write this over lunch, in a little courtyard tucked away around a corner where a merchant is playing Britney Spears, "One More Time", a timeless classic! ;) Taxi stand
![FB_IMG_1525952931305.jpg] The infrastructure leaves no doubt this is the third world,devastated by war at so typical,this was once an important stop along the trade route between Tibet/China and India. Now it is making slow progress and is probably best known for Mt. Everest trekking tourists. Everything is dusty,noisy and slow.I actually enjoy the challenge of not twisting and an ankle while weaving and dodging my way along the streets with multiple vendors backgoning me along my way. On this day I has my Lonely planet with me to avoid getting lost and to find numerous historic sights unfortunately,the Lonely planet is a dead giveaway to vendors...I might as well be wearing a "Mount Everest "Tshirt, or one that reads "yak yak yak Nepal"!
There is some electrical engineering genious who knows how this all works! Colourful prayer flags are everywhere and add character to the streets. A severe earthquake hit in 2015 killing more than 4000 people and damaging many structures. the signs of it remain almost everywhere you look. Most religious temples and structures are made of carved teak and survived the quake guite well. The unpretentious entrance to my hotel. it is actually quite nice inside...once you find it. Art shops. Down a little alley (one of hundreds is not thousands) a courtyard where these locals are having laughs playing charades! (really)
Incredible teak carving all over. not just on special shrines. Here we see the standard pair of guard-cats protecting the entrance. against bad spirits. School kids in the courtyard heading of Lunch. A secondary school. A dental clinic, professionals awaiting a desperate patient?!Using Buddha's name what could possibly go wrong? Cool little Hindu shrines everywhere. Many merchants spray the street with water to keep the dust down... the results are interesting on foot as motor bikes splash by. So many merchant and so many beautiful products,mostly made locally. This particular street once formed part of the trade route between India and China. There are only a few very challenging passes through the Himalayas. Kathmandu is in a valley just south of the Himalayas which run from west to east along the north side of Nepal. Many local weaved products ... cashmere and other. This poor guy was doing his best toget out of the way as the truck behind him beeped impatiently. Many structures are being supported like this after the earthquake. I'm sure this method meets local construction codes. This is a destroyed Temple where the Beetles came to hang out, jam and smoke hashish during a period of withdrawal and meditation following their mercurial success in the 1960s.
More to follow. Then I'm off to pokhara where I will rent a motorbike to explore with my friend.
