Thanks for comment. Closer to the north pole - more extreme weather conditions. We can easily see this in nature - here, above 500 meters are almost no more forests, above 1000 nothing grows, despite small bushes and grasses, 1500 is just a naked rock... (Not everywhere but in most cases, when we talk about mountains, not the plateau)
