Pilgrim's Kitchen and Inn - Places to stay in Savannakhet, Laos

This is where I stayed last night, about 200m from the riverbank and quite a pleasant suprise after my normal guest house was full! The place I normally stay was certainly more run down than this place but I just loved it's location right on tbe river bank road where I could sit for hours watching the world, and the river go by. No matter......

Pilgrim's Kitchen and Inn is owned and run by a lovely Indian guy named Chook.The menu is wide and varied including western style as well as local and Indian dishes but his coffee is out of this world!

Chook roasts his own beans on-site which come from Southern Laos and are grown in a volcanic region with huge rainfall untainted with big city pollution...that sold me, and although I don't go a bundle on boutique coffee culture, this coffee was gorgeous and he serves his Capuccinos Italian style; not too hot!

The ground floor consists of the restaurant and coffee bar and a chilled out sofa for residents to relax or read books from his little library. They do of course serve beers too, including the ubiquitous 'Beer Lao' and a great local brew, 'Beer Savvan'. There are also a number of small local bars and restos in the locale, despite what I read about many foreigners complaining that Savvanakhet is quiet and boring, quiet it maybe but boring it certainly isn't. Obviously they have made no effort to just walk around the place discovering things for themselves.

There are also bicycles to rent cheaply though it was a bit warm for me lol

There are 2 standards of room, I stayed in the cheaper one as it was all there was left. The room was simple but spotlessly clean and was really comfy. Often in SE Asian guest houses, the beds are like concrete! The other room type has a balcony and overlooks the street as you can see in the first pic, will definitely be trying that room next time

We had hot water, aircon, fridge and quite unusually for cheap guest houses, tea and coffee making and toiletries. The towels were supplied and were even soft! Another bonus.

The only moot point was that the only window was just 6 inches away from next doors wall, useless and the curtains you can see behind the bed cover a false window. Not to worry too much as there was some natural daylight and the high ceilings made it feel quite airey.

How much? One double room for one night...$20 USD or about THB600....absolute steal.

Available on booking.com traveoka.com and expedia, I'd absolutely recommend this place to anyone.

By the way, when I rolled back in from the pub at about midnight, Chook had his roaster running and the smell of coffee roasting wafting down the street was divine.
