The homelessness situation in Seattle has only exploded in the last 5–10 years. There have always been areas... but all the people under the freeway is a relatively new thing. I haven’t watched Seattle is Dying but most people locally find it is misrepresentative of the root causes of the issue. It is also produced by our city’s least reliable and sensationalist TV station. For what it’s worth.

The cost of living here has SKYROCKETED with the arrival of Amazon HQ. The recession in 2009 only hit the city softly, so salaries, and expenses went up quickly after. A lot of people have been priced out of the area or came here hoping to get in on the boom. Only to find themselves homeless.... plus funding was cut on low income housing, people end up here for the mild climate... and of course drugs.
