Every prison in every part of the world always carries with it a history of injustice and pain.
Moving slightly out of the center of Dublin you can get in touch with the history of Kilmainham Gaol, the old prison of the Irish capital.
It was built towards the end of the 18th century but became famous later, in fact it became the prison for excellence in which political prisoners were detained and tortured during the struggles for the independence of Ireland.

Ogni carcere, in ogni parte del mondo, porta sempre con sé una storia fatta di ingiustizie e dolore.
Spostandosi un po’ fuori dal centro di Dublino è possibile entrare in contatto con la storia del Kilmainham Gaol, il vecchio carcere della capitale Irlandese.
Fu costruito verso la fine del XVIII secolo ma divenne famoso più avanti, infatti diventò il carcere per eccellenza in cui venivano detenuti e torturati i prigionieri politici durante le lotte per l’indipendenza dell’Irlanda.

The air was unhealthy, the building was designed above a small river, the walls ruined by mold and the inmates tried on their skin what it meant to be in hell.
Narrow and cramped cells, constant punishments for trying to get information from the revolutionaries, terror was palpable up to the shooting that took place in the courtyard of the building, precisely in the courtyard, on a wall, you can still see holes left by the bullets.
Even many ordinary people were imprisoned here, including children, there was no distinction of sex and everything was allowed.

L’aria era malsana, la costruzione fu progettata sopra un fiumiciattolo, le pareti rovinate dalla muffa ed i detenuti provavano sulla loro pelle cosa significava stare all’inferno.
Celle strette e anguste, punizioni costanti per cercare di ottenere informazioni dai rivoluzionari, il terrore era palpabile fino ad arrivare alla fucilazione che avveniva nel cortile dell’edificio, appunto nel cortile, su un muro di cinta, si possono vedere ancora dei fori lasciati dai proiettili.
Anche moltissime persone comuni furono incarcerate qui, inclusi bambini, non c’era distinzione di sesso e tutto era permesso.

The prison also houses a museum that in a very direct way tells the story of the prison and of the famine that occurred in Ireland from 1846 to 1849, a famine that increased the number of people imprisoned, a small theft due to hunger was enough to be arrested.
The place of detention can be visited thanks to a guided tour, maximum 30 people at a time, starting from the chapel you will always go deeper into the story and the guide will make you literally understand what it meant to be even remotely suspected of a crime, all it will be emotionally touching.
The prison stopped working in 1924 and in modern times it was used as a scenario for music videos and various films.
An experience that I recommend, obviously it is a place where there are many tourists but understanding and knowing what man has been able to do to his peers is always an experience to grow.

Il carcere ospita anche un museo che in modo molto diretto racconta la storia della prigione e della carestia avvenuta in Irlanda dal 1846 al 1849, carestia che fece accrescere il numero di persone incarcerate, bastava un piccolo furto dovuto alla fame, per essere arrestati.
Il luogo di detenzione può essere visitato grazie ad un tour guidato, massimo 30 persone per volta, partendo dalla cappella si entrerà sempre più a fondo nella storia e la guida vi farà letteralmente capire cosa significava essere anche solo lontanamente sospettato di un crimine, il tutto sarà emotivamente toccante.
Il carcere ha smesso di funzionare nel 1924 ed in epoca moderna è stato utilizzato come scenario per video musicali e svariati film.
Un’esperienza che consiglio, ovviamente è un luogo in cui ci sono molti turisti ma capire e conoscere cosa è stato in grado di fare l’uomo ai propri simili è sempre un’esperienza per crescere.
