Tourism on Koh Lipe

In case you missed my last post on accomodation on Koh Lipe and the Sunrise beach, have a look at it, this is the beach with the best white sand strip.

In general Koh Lipe is quite touristy! So if you expect to come to an empty “Cast Away”-like island you might be disappointed. But you can definitely manage to find some more lonesome places on the island like Sunset beach. Some areas in the north and middle of the island are not too popular with tourists. Most tourists stay at Sunrise beach, the Walking street or Pattaya beach. Today’s post is about this third and last beach on Koh Lipe - Pattaya beach. And the beach lives up to it’s name.

Pattaya Beach

Pattaya beach is the southern beach on Koh Lipe where the big boats from and to the mainland start and stop, so it was the first beach we saw. Its sand is just like the one at Sunrise beach - brilliant white. It’s the main beach of the island with direct access to the Walking Street - the main street with heaps of restaurants, shops and bars.

Pattaya Beach is the go to place for nightlife on Koh Lipe. It’s a long row of resorts and beach bars that lure with fire shows and cocktail happy hours at night. We were there at low season, so many bars closed quite early. But I heard in peak season this beach turns into a lively nightlife scene. So for people seeking for calmness it’s maybe not the best choice.
Another flaw on that beach are the already mentioned speed boats from the mainland that make it quite noisy and sometimes (if you’re close by) uncomfortable to bath.
Pattaya Beach is the shortest connection between Sunset Beach and the walking street, so lots of people use it as pathway, which makes it a bit troubled.

I appreciated Pattaya beach most for a cold coffee in a shadowy bar with a nice view while escaping the sun for some time. Also it’s the perfect spot for a beach stroll after dinner on the Walking Street. My favorite spot was “Cafe Lipe” close to the Walking street entrance. It’s owned by a Swiss that also offers some bamboo bungalows on the venue.
The whole cafe is built underneath a canopy of leaves between big trees, so the perfect spot for some shadow at noon. The food is delicious, the view relaxing and if you get bored you can borrow a book from the book sharing shelf.

Falls du meinen letzten Post über die Unterkunft auf Koh Lipe und den Sunrise Beach verpasst hast, schau ihn dir unbedingt an, das ist der Strand mit dem schönsten weißen Sandstreifen.

Generell ist Koh Lipe ziemlich touristisch! Wenn man also hofft auf eine leere “Robinson Crusoe”-ähnliche Insel zu stoßen wird man vermutlich enttäuscht werden. Aber man kann auf jeden Fall ruhigere Ecken - wie den Sunset Beach - auf der Insel finden. Manche Bereiche im Norden und der Mitte der Insel sind bei Touristen nicht so beliebt. Die meisten Touristen bleiben am Sunrise Beach, auf der Walking Street oder dem Pattaya Beach. Der heutige Post dreht sich um den diesen dritten und letzten Strand von Koh Lipe - Pattaya Beach. Und der Strand macht seinem Namen alle Ehre.

Pattaya Beach

Der Pattaya Beach ist der südlichste Strand auf Koh Lipe wo die großen Boote vom und zum Festland starten und stoppen, deshalb ist es der erste Strand den man sieht. Der Sand ist genau wie am Sunrise Beach strahlend weiß. Es ist der Hauptstrand der Insel, von hier kommt man direkt in die Walking Street - die Hauptstraße mit unzähligen Restaurants, Shops und Bars.

Pattaya Beach ist die erste Anlaufstelle für Nachtleben auf Koh Lipe. Dort reihen sich Hotels und Strandbars aneinander die Abends mit Feuershows und Happy Hours locken. Wir waren dort in der Nebensaison, deshalb hatten viele Bars dort schon recht früh geschlossen. Aber ich habe mir sagen lassen, dass der Strand ich während der Hauptsaison ein quirliges Nachtleben entwickelt. Für Leute die Ruhe suchen ist er daher vielleicht nicht die beste Wahl. Ein anderes Manko an dem Strand sind die eben erwähnten Speed Boote vom Festland die es dort recht laut machen und manchmal (wenn man in der Nähe ist) etwas ungemütlich zum baden.
Der Pattaya Beach ist die kürzeste Verbindung zwischen dem Sunset Beach und der Walking Street, deshalb nutzen ihn viele Menschen als Weg, was es etwas unruhig macht.

Ich bevorzugte den Pattaya Beach vor allem für einen kalten Kaffee in einer schattigen Bar mit schöner Aussicht um der Sonne für eine Weile zu entfliehen. Es ist auch der perfekte Ort für einen Strandspaziergang nach dem Abendessen in der Walking Street. Besonders hat mir dort das “Cafe Lipe” in der Nähe des Eingangs zur Walking Street gefallen. Es wird von einem Schweizer geführt, der auch einige Bambushütten auf dem Gelände anbietet.
Das ganze Cafe ist unter einem Blätterdach zwischen großen Bäumen errichtet und deshalb der perfekte Spot für ein schattiges Plätzchen während der Mittagshitze. Das Essen ist super lecker, die Aussicht entspannend und wenn einem langweilig werden sollte kann man am gemeinschaftlichen Tausch-Bücherregal ein Buch ausleihen.
