The coastal village
In the shadow of Valletta's majestic bastions lies Pietà. The coastal village which curves around Marsamuscetto harbour may look unassuming but nestled within its streets lie reminders of a rich and eclectic past. Home to historic St Luke's Hospital and Ta-Braxia cemetery, the village preserves tales of a thriving military history and serves as the final resting place for veterans of both the first and second world wars. Pietà also boasts a royal connection and was once home to Queen Elizabeth during her years of residency in Malta.
The village of Mercy
Today history collides with modernity along the harbour. The village has found new life as a bustling stop on route to the capital but reminders of the past lie firmly fixed in stone. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the recently restored chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows stands as a symbol of this longevity. Pietà may lie in the shadows of the bastions, but the locality is no less important to Malta's history. Pietà has formed a lasting identity and is truly deserving of its name, The village of Mercy.
