Discover Malta's silent city, Mdina

Mdina
The ancient fortified city of Mdina is Malta’s gem. Founded in the 8th Century under the Phoenicians and acting capital until 1530, Mdina is an architectural delight with perfect examples of Norman and Baroque construction around every corner. The Norman House, Palazzo Falson opens its doors to the public between 10am and 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday and the Baroque cathedral of St Paul’s contains magnificent panel paintings and masonry. The city is also home to Malta’s National Museum of natural history and the Mdina dungeons offer a more gruesome insight into the city’s past.

With horse drawn Karozzin replacing cars, Mdina possesses a unique ambiance and is popularly referred to as the Silent City. As you walk through the city gates you might feel as though you have entered into a film set, and you would not be mistaken. Mdina has become a popular filming location for hit television dramas such as Game of Thrones. The outer bastions boast panoramic views across Malta which are shared by Café Fontanella, a popular stop off renowned for its indulgent cakes and friendly atmosphere.

What’s more, Mdina is just a short walk from the bus terminal in neighbouring Rabat boasting excellent public transport links including the 53 from Valletta and X3 from Bugibba
