7 Waterfalls To See In Iceland

Visiting “The Land of Fire and Ice” has been on my to-do list for some time. The striking and majestic beauty of this place is truly a sight to behold and I was completely taken by the grandeur and splendor of this place.

Here are my picks for the 7 waterfalls to see when in Iceland!

Öxarárfoss

My favourite part about this waterfall was the journey to it.
Arriving at the parking lot, pass through the gate and descend to what looks like Middle Earth. After traversing through the rock canyon you will then follow the wooden path straight to the waterfall.

Gullfoss

Gullfoss is called the "Golden Falls". Even on a rainy day, the falls are a sight to behold.

There's a story that long ago there was a discussion of a hydroelectric project involving the falls. The daughter of a farmer walked barefoot through Reykjavik saying she would throw herself into the falls if the project was not stopped. Now, the farmer's daughter was celebrated by a monument by Gulfoss.

Seljalandsfoss

Definitely one of Iceland's popular tourist destinations. The waterfall is about 60 meters high and it was very exciting to be able to explore behind the waterfall.

There are steps on both sides of the waterfall but it is still very slippery. Safety is always first, so tread carefully.

Skogafoss

Another popular location in the Golden Circle.

The power of this waterfall is impressive and I would recommend keeping a small cloth in your bag to wipe down after.

Hundafoss Waterfall in Skaftafell National Park

In under 30 minutes, you can reach this view with minimal effort. An interval series of stairs and a well-maintained route through golden leaves will take you to this spectacular view.

Bruarfoss

How To Get To Bruarfoss

Located about an hour drive from Reykjavik, this waterfall is known for its beautiful blue water.

Out of all of the waterfalls listed, this was the most challenging to get to.

I recommend using Google Maps to map to Bruafoss.

This will get you to the private property where the falls are located within. The easiest way to get to the trail is to look for Campsite #9.

The unpaved road on your left-hand side is a bit before that Campsite. If you pass Campsite 10/11 you will see the barbed wire fence and know that you have gone too far.

It is a straight line on the dirt path that will take you to the falls. You will reach a fork in the path, be sure to continue straight on the right and not in the direction of the sign.

Shortly you will arrive at a bridge, cross the bridge and you will soon be at the glorious falls.

It was incredibly muddy when I went in October, I recommend wearing hiking shoes with good grip and strongly advise against running shoes.

Faxi

I truly enjoy having to walk only a few steps from the parking lot to a beautiful waterfall.

Also located in the Golden Circle, I would imagine a bright, magical blue on a sunny day.
