BUCKET LIST: My Ancient City of Petra Journey Part 3

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to part 3 of my journey to the ancient city of Petra!

So after staying the night at the Bedouin campsite we took a short 1 hour drive up to Petra. The entrance to Petra was a narrow passageway in between rocky canyons which lead for nearly a mile. Along the walls of this passage way were various carvings and the road was once marble however not much of that marble remains today.

After walking through the passage way we were greeted with an amazing sight of The Treasury. The timing was perfect because the sun had positioned itself to shine directly onto The Treasury

The Treasury was a temple carved into the rock face. Contrary to the Indiana Jones movie there wasn't anything inside, once through the main door there was just one room.

Walking past The Treasury the was a whole town carved into the rock face as well as royal tombs.

They even had a theatre.

This city would have been alive with people mainly traders 2000 years ago. Apparently around 20,000 people lived here. Unfortunately not long after the Romans invaded it around 100AD trade began to dwindle. By 700AD the city was abandoned and became lost and it wasn't rediscovered until 1812 by a swiss explorer.

Today it's one of the wonders of the world with over 1 million tourists visiting this marvel each year.
