I've uploaded an older video from earlier on, so I can keep my travel blog here on Steemit complete.

The call of the grey catbird can make you think you hear a poor kitten in distress, lost in the woods. The sound can keep you wondering because the catbird is rarely seen, only heard. Very secretive, it tends to hide itself in dense vegetation low to the ground and quickly move around, rarely flying in an open area.

I heard this catbird while on a hike in the Davidsonville Historic State Park in northeastern Arkansas. Davidsonville was established in 1815 and was one of the first settlements in the Arkansas Territory. It was an important port on the Black River. It is mostly an archeological site, as very little remains are visible above ground. The park has a nice hiking trail through woods that gives one a feeling of isolation. It has a campground with all the amenities, including hot showers. The tent sites are a bargain at $13. Two free camping areas are nearby though. The Shirey Bay Rainey Brake Wildlife Management Area is 23 miles southwest and the Dave Donaldson Black River Wildlife Management Area is 31 miles northwest. Both are primitive, but I was able to find a picnic table where there is a boat access to the Black River at the Dave Donaldson WMA. This is a spot where you should avoid during duck hunting season though. There are many shanties and cabins along the banks of the Black River where the duck hunters reside. The area is very similar looking to a bayou you might see in Louisiana. A couple of good ole boys that lived in the area stopped by to chat when curiosity got the better of them seeing I was not from around these parts. They gave me a beer and told me about the area. They both had lived here all their lives and hadn’t ventured anyplace else and so they were entertained by my nomad lifestyle.

There are quite a few WMAs in northeastern Arkansas and the only places in this region of the state where free camping can be found that I was able to discover. There is no dispersed camping opportunities in national forest land once you get east of the Ozark National Forest.
