Kalamata - The historical church of Agioi Apostoloi

Last week I traveled to Kalamata for the Greek Orthodox Easter. Kalamata is a modern city in Southern Greece in the county of Peloponesse.

At Kalamata we walked a lot on the paved streets of the old city and at some point we have reached the 23rd March square and the Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi.
This church, built at 11th century AD, is considered as a significant chapter of Greek History since it is the place where the 1st doxology of Greek Revolution as a free territory took place. It is said that in this doxology Greek liberation heroes such as Kolokotronis, Mavromichalis, Papaflessas and Nikitaras were present. Take a look in this beautiful church and the historical square!
