What's this contraption right near the entrance of a historic house?
No, it's not a fireplace.
Back in the days when streets weren't paved, people used have these 'bootscrapers' at the front door of their houses, to scrape off dirt from their shoes before entering a building.
In Exeter you can still see these 'bootscrapers' in some historic streets.
