My trip to Georgetown, Penang

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

I'm writing this post sitting in the bus (hooray to complimentary Wi-Fi and sockets) on my way to KL from another incredible Malaysian island - Penang, literally minutes after this glorious and very warm sunrise, have a look

and while it’s still fresh and so vivid, I want to share a few photos from the weekend that I spent there, as well as some tips and useful info.

Mix of cultures

With more than 150 year presence of Brits on the island, as well as influence of Chinese, Indian and Islamic communities, Georgetown (capital city of Penang) is a unique mix of architecture - colonial buildings, skyscrapers, churches, temples, mosques..

All of those could easily be seen in 5 min, walking one street.

Due to its remarkable heritage In 2008 Georgetown was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Interesting fact about this place, that girls love (I wonder why, duh?!) is that Penang is the birthplace of shoe designer Jimmy Choo.

Mix of street art

Another thing that you definitely going to love about Georgetown is its street art.  Walls of Georgetown are home to some of the greatest pieces of street art I’ve seen in the past few years.

And among dozen of ambitious artists that contributed there talent and skills to streetscape of Georgetown, one name that stands out is Ernest Zacharevic. Please enjoy =)

 'Boy on a Bike'

'Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur'

 'Little Children on a Bicycle'

And many, many more.. download a map and go on a tour to see them all.

And after that just another great spot that I found downtown is The Postcard Shop. It offers more than 200 different types of postcards. including some of those incredible street art postcards! Pop in and share a memory with your friends and family. Check this out!

And if postcards aren't your thing, just enjoy a cup of coffee and company of this lazy cat (everyone loves cats, right?)

That's all for now. Please leave your comments below, if there is anything you would like to know and I will try to get back to you right away, or cover it in my further posts.
