'The First King'

crta.png

It looks like King Tomislav' s monument is getting new plateau around it. The two guys working on it were kind to explain. At first, I thought that the monument sunk into the ground but it's not the case.

King Tomislav was the first King Of Croatia, crowned in 925. Mind you, it was a thousand years before 1925. I didn't make a spelling mistake. :D King Tomislav is far from an undocumented legend. He was a historical figure whose achievements were mentioned in many documents of the time, including several written by the Pope.

He fought off hostiles coming from the north and east. Namely Hungarians and Bulgarians, who were both grand military forces at the time. After Bulgarians occupied Serbia, they were defeated and stopped in their further advance by King Tomislav. At the time, Bulgarians were mighty force feard even by the Byzantines themselves. One may say that Croatia was a strong military power of the era.

Back then, people fought with heart, steel and flesh, not with drones, cyber attacks and unmanned tanks (already developed), like today. Wars became first person's shooters and we became Lords of Our Armchairs and Kings of Broadcasted Replay. Unfortunately, wars are and will always be about killing people regardless of the technology used.

Wars were always the number one vehicle for advancement and progress, however silly it may sound. The human race has a peculiar trait. We tend to use our brains for inventing new things when there is a fair chance we might use it as a weapon against a fellow human. More or less every bit of technology used today was first developed for military purposes. So sad, but true.

The way it's going, maybe someday, say 1100 years from now, a top rung gamer, will also have a monument. :D

It's time of peace. Enjoy your day! :)

It is a majestic monument that shows all the greatness of this king. This man was a legend and an influential person of that time. His merits have influenced the course of history. Judging by official information - Tomislav made the Croatian kingdom the most powerful state in the Balkans. After his death, the Croatian kingdom began to decline. The era of Tomislav is recognized as the "golden age" of the Croatian kingdom. Still it is interesting that his image was on the brands of Yugoslavia.

Now, you can buy Tomislav's beer. By the way, the strongest, the same strong as this ruler :) On the other hand it was so long and it's nice to see that you are honored by the memory of your own history. It's good that they do not forget to pay attention to such values and "update" them. I believe that we need to know the history of our own state.

I like to watch historical films. But more than that I like to visit the festivals of old-time culture. We have such. It is really interesting to "plunge" into the medieval atmosphere and posmoret as battles and entertainment of that time. Previously, people were more bold. They had the courage to equip themselves in heavy armor and go conquer other lands. It was a harsh and noble time. Time of heroes. But now it is time for the courageous heroes. Many conflicts occur in the virtual world. Even influential politicians. For example, Donald Trump is a "tweeter fighter". Lover throwing threats. Especially when he threatened North Korea.

I liked your thinking and photos. Thank you

I have read somewhere (forgot where) that you can tell how a person died by looking at the monument. If both legs of the horse are on the ground then the person on the horse did not die related to battle, if one leg of the horse is in the air then the person was wounded in battle and if two front legs of the horse are in the air then the person died in battle. I do not know if there is truth in that but it is interesting to look around Zagreb and notice where are the horse's legs :)

Thank you ;)

What I know about this country Geographically, the country is located at the intersection of Pannonian, Balkan and Adriatic land.

Croatia holds the title of a country with rich natural resources and rich historical heritage thousands of years ago to become part of UNESCO's world heritage.

The cool climate along the coast also makes this country unique for travelers with a perfect blend of Central and Mediterranean culture that adds to the charm of this archipelago country (consisting of 1,185 islands). Like other European countries, Croatia has a high culture and customs. Yugoslavia is the target of international tourists every year.

The direct border with the Adriatic Sea makes Croatia a major producer of marine life and millions of fish species living in the oceans of Croatia, especially in the Dalmatia region (Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik). The country is also limited by relics of the Ottoman Empire, Bosnia, which is predominantly Muslim.

This has a major impact on the development of people's perspectives on religious and cultural differences. Although dominated by Catholic populations, Islam also colored some corners of the city from the Eastern European wing. It was proven by the government's permission to build a mosque as the Islamic Center in Zagreb City, the second Croatian capital after Varazdin City.

But about kings, I do not have much knowledge.

Deep sigh. Sad but true, most of our really top flight inventions have come about from war. Killing people or repairing them to get back on the battlefield.

I think the gamers are already significant. We called them tech weenies back in the day, but presently they are flying the drones and the micro guided missles. Deep sea divers almost don't exist anymore, there are submersibles that can go way deeper, do more, and don't have to waste time on taking care of the human. The US Navy has lit a fighter grade unmanned jet on Aircraft carriers. Fighter pilots will soon be as useful as buggy whips.

So. The inventions go on. Maybe in 1100 years there will be a monument to the guy that figured something important out that didn't have to do with making other people dead. It could happen.

Thanks for the marvelous photographs of a monument under repair. It is good to see a government taking care of old stuff instead of always building new...

this is a great and best travelling post of wonderfull scenery capture good place..really its very attractive your excellent shots photography.. just beautifull .. I like to watch historical films. It is heart breaking to see that man uses the wisdom GOD gave them to build weapons of mass destruction.

Starting from the time of the invention of the bow and arrow to latest sub-machine guns, wars have not in anyway reduced, rather it continues with more intensity even.

You can take a look at North Korea for instance with the Nukes and intercontinental ballistic missiles and the US threatening with theirs as well.

Thanks a lot @velimir for bringing this into light, never knew croatia had a powerful king. We just hope that one day man will realize his foolishness and stop designing things that can harm his own fellow man

And again stunning photos from you. Thank you for this story. It is not always possible to find good photographs, and you also attached a wonderful and interesting story. Yes, before, people fought for land, food and weapons with the sword and arrows. Now, the war is not needed, I am categorically against such a manifestation of strength and power. We live in a developing world and wars do not have to exist now.

dear @velimir, I did not know about King Tomislav Croatia I was not entirely aware of this incident. I am a knowledgeable person. I like to explore knowledge so thank you very much for your information.

King Tomislav is a very intriguing person in European history. He is considered to be the first ruler of Croats, a king with much wisdom and determination, always ready to defend his folk against foes and mischief of any kind. But he is also considered loyal to his allies and open to everyone with good intentions. As such, he is the first Croat to greet foreign visitors in Zagreb, as his monument is situated in front of city’s main train station. Later, he will join them in the bar as well, because a local dark beer has been named after him. Indeed, Tomislav’s meek character can be perfectly seen in the fact that he, as royalty, gladly accompanies you in your drinking sessions.
Glad to see You there : )

Sad but true, yap :( Technology is a double sided sword. It can lead us to live among the stars or it can destroy us in the blink of a second.

Great post man, thanks for sharing a lilttle knowledge, I always appreciate that..
