A New Way to Travel from Chicago to Miami: Amtrak’s The Floridian Route

If you’re like me and not the biggest fan of flying—especially with the recent uptick in aviation incidents—you might be looking for a new way to travel long distances without dealing with airport stress. Well, Amtrak has stepped up in a big way, opening a new rail route connecting Chicago to Miami. It’s called The Floridian, and it’s shaping up to be a solid alternative for those of us who prefer to keep our feet on the ground.

Why Take the Train?

Flying has never been my favorite. The turbulence, the cramped seats, the hassle of security—it all adds up to a stressful experience. And with recent aviation mishaps making headlines, my flight anxiety is at an all-time high. That’s why I was intrigued when I heard that Amtrak launched The Floridian, offering a direct train ride from Chicago to Miami with multiple stops in between.

Now, before you pack your bags, here’s something to keep in mind: this isn’t a quick trip. The Floridian takes about 48 hours from start to finish. That’s two full days on the train. If you’re used to a three-hour flight, this is a major shift in travel time. But if you can embrace the journey, it’s an experience all its own.

The Route & Stops

Amtrak designed this route to combine elements of their Capitol Limited and Silver Star lines, making for a seamless Midwest-to-Southeast journey. Along the way, The Floridian stops at some major cities, giving passengers the chance to break up their trip or explore new places:

Indianapolis, IN – A great place for food and culture, and home to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Louisville, KY – If you love bourbon and history, this is a must-stop.

Nashville, TN – Music City! Whether you’re into honky-tonks or hot chicken, this stop is worth it.

Atlanta, GA – A booming city with deep history, fantastic food, and plenty of sights.

Jacksonville, FL – The gateway to Florida, offering a coastal vibe and easy connections to other Florida destinations.

Miami, FL – The final stop, where the beaches, nightlife, and warm weather await.

This route offers something different from the usual rush of air travel—it’s slower, yes, but it also provides a chance to unwind, enjoy the scenery, and travel in a way that feels more connected to the journey itself.
