One of the northern most pueblos in Nayarit is the sleepy little fishing village of Lo de Marcos. Known for is quiet atmosphere and abundance of relocated older Expats Lo de Marcos is one of Nayarits best kept secrets. Given that the bustling towns of San Pancho and Sayulita are just to the south with all the parties and vibrations that go along with that, it really is a treat to have a quiet sanctuary such as this to the north.

There is a culture of ranchero horseback riding and dancing horses there. If you find yourself wandering down some of the dusty roads you will see horses around every corner. If you go in the early morning or in the late after noon when the head of the day is not an issue you will find the rancheros training their horses in dancing. This particular style of horse dancing is unique to Mexico and really is a pleasure to see. The horses essentially prance with raising their feet highly and gracefully so as the rider appears to just be floating on their back while riding in place. The rhythmic clicking of the hooves is musical and delightful. The rancheros reassure me that the training is pleasant for the horses, but it looks rather strange as they tie them to this platform and manually move their legs with a contraption that they are tied to.

The beach of Lo de Marcos is relatively un-touched. Anytime of day as long as it is not during a holiday you will find you are one of the only people walking the beach. The water is calm for swimming and there is even a small reef for snorkeling.

There are plenty of solid options for food at great prices and several nights a week you can find live entertainment.
