Moroccan port located in the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier constitutes since the time of the Phoenicians a strategic point between Africa and Europe. On the hillside, its whitewashed medina features the Dar el Makhzen, an ancient sultans palace now a museum of ancient objects in Morocco. Occupying a former Moorish-style consulate dating back to 1821, the American Legation Museum, also in the Medina, traces the history of the first diplomatic relations between the United States and Morocco.
