The Diego Martin Town in the Northern Range was once filled with a number of small valleys but is now a densely populated area. It was named after a Spanish explorer Don Diego Martín.[1] The area was settled by French planters and their slaves in the 1780s.

Measuring approximately 1976 hectares and located in Diego Martin, River Estate was the largest and most prestigious sugar estate. River Estate Museum is named after the river that flows through the valley. The estate was once inhabited by the native Amerindians, then the freed slaves In order to power the rollers to crush the sugar cane from the Estate Lands, a cast iron water wheel was subsequently built in 1835, and the water for turning the wheel came from the nearby Diego Martin River. Located just across from the River Estate Museum, this is probably the only remaining complete water wheel in Trinidad.
