one day in Greece #4
hello to all today I'm talking about the archipelago of santorini
The Santorini archipelago is a group of volcanic islands located in the Aegean Sea, in the Cyclades, 186 kilometres southeast of mainland Greece. It is made up of five islands, the largest of which is Santorini, also called Thera or Thíra. Thus, the name Santorini, Thera or Thíra may designate, depending on the context, either the main island or the entire archipelago made up of the latter and its dependencies.
With a surface area of 76 km2 and a population of 10,700 inhabitants in 2001, the Santorini archipelago is the southernmost member and most active volcano in the Aegean archipelago. The two main islands, Santorini and Thirassía, are separated by a bay made up of a submerged caldera. These islands are the remains of a probable single island partially destroyed around 1600 BC during the Minoan eruption. The active part of this volcano is the island of Néa Kaméni, located in the centre of the archipelago.
In 1970 Akrotiri's frescoes, witnesses of Minoan civilization dating back to the 2nd millennium BC, were unearthed on the island of Santorini. Important collections of ceramics have also been excavated from the field. These works of art were spared the Minoan eruption and buried beneath volcanic ashes and pumice.
we leave Santorini to go to Crete Island.
