Drone night flight + hyperlapse. Adjusting settings. (video)

in #travel7 years ago

Night flights can be hit or miss depending on lighting. With stationary cameras, long exposures work every time, but any movement will cause blur and ruin an image. With drones typically in motion, long exposures aren't always suitable. Lowering the exposure can help but editing is always needed after.

In the first image above, yellow and orange hues have been greatly reduced. A colder bluish feel is created. For night shots, strong dark shadows are acceptable and by reducing the amber colours created from the road lighting, it is perhaps more fitting- after all roads are grey/black and not orange.

The image below shows yellows and oranges enhanced, thus giving a much warmer, softer feel. Leaving the images without any enhancement shows a rather bland and flat scene.

The video is of mixed styles- I can't quite decide which is better!

During the late evening, just before the street lights come on, the image creates a very different feel again.

Filming video or taking photos in the correct lighting can dramatically change an image. At night we are reliant upon artificial lighting, while during the day, we need the sun. The final image below has neither and offers a flat image of mid tones- not really the best.
