Reminiscing about Guatemala (part 1)
Last year, I went on one of the best adventures of my life with @yachtcaptain and other close friends. We started in Caye Caulker, Belize and ended in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. We had no real plans, other than to try make it as far as possible in the 6 weeks we had, which seems like a long time...until you are actually exploring these new countries.
My absolute favorite part of this adventure was Guatemala.
We had originally only planned on passing through Guatemala on our way to Honduras, where we would meet up with some friends and celebrate my birthday! We ended up spending almost 2 weeks in this amazing country.
While waiting for the "chicken bus" out of Belize we met a few people who had just spent about a month in Guatemala and could not say enough great things about the country. So, we decided to check it out.
The first stop was Tikal, which is one of the largest cities and archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilizations in the Americas. Long story short, we eventually made it to Tikal and signed up for the EARLY morning hike to see the sunrise over the big pyramid.
So, we woke up at 4am and began our hike to see the view. It was pretty epic, sitting on part of a pyramid watching the sunrise over the beautiful ancient city.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the sunrise.
...but i do have this gem...
...and there were bugs...
After we hiked back down, we got to check out the ancient city.
NEXT STOP: ANTIGUA!
....coming soon....
