Croatia Day One

in #travel6 years ago

As I did when I covered our Italy trip in March I will do a post a day for each of the days we were in Zagreb and surrounds.

Our first day was rather uneventful as regards visiting the city. The travel agent had booked us into the Double Tree by Hilton hotel in the business district despite us asking for a hotel in the 'old town'. This trip was actually a prize that @fempower received for being the best salesperson in her company for the entire continent of Africa so we were at the mercy of others to make the arrangements, we just specified the destination we wished to travel to.

Things did not start so well. Whilst we were taxing to the airport landing bay the Head Cabin Crew lady came over and advised us our luggage was not on board and would be arriving the next afternoon. We had already been in our clothes for 24 hours and were not to happy to know we would have to spend another 30 hours or so in the same clothes, no toiletries etc., but back to the matter in hand

I was in sandals and a tired track suit pants and t-shirt and extremely jet lagged so we did not do much exploring....merely walked around the area getting a feel for the place.

We nearly got knocked over on more than one occasion as we drive on the left hand side of the road and they drive on the right...hence we stepped into the path of cars whilst looking the other way.

The above photo's were taken within 500 m's of our hotel. We walked around the corner towards the hotel and this is what we saw.....

so we meandered over that way for a closer look and found ourselves bombarded by reflected sunlight ...

The highlight of this walk was a goddess on rollerblades passing us looking so graceful and in absolute control. Even my good lady had some nice things to say about her.... high praise indeed {grin}

We headed back to the hotel to freshen up...then put on our tired clothes and headed out to find some authentic Croation food, eschewing the option to eat in the hotels extremely expensive restaurant. We stumbled on what turned out to be a little jewel. I cannot remember the names of what we ate as I was dumb and did not take photographs of the menu

The food in the foreground is what they call 'Dumplings stuffed with meat' ... no dumplings in sight, or at least not what we in South Africa call dumplings. What surprised me is the amount of raw onion that came with it. I loved the food and the onions were crisp and sweet (but way too much), the meat was extremely tasty and complemented by the smooth cream cheese drizzled over it. The smooth cheese was definitely @fempowers favorite food for the week

This is by far the least interesting day I will be covering so keep an eye out for DAY TWO where we get reunited with our clothes and go searching further afield.

Namaste

Definitely sounds like an interesting start to the trip! Oh, and congrats to @fempower for the best salesperson reward - 'tis a wicked cool thing! 😊
