Iceland Series: Nature & Landscapes
Hi friends!
For this article, we thought we should share some of the beautiful landscapes and natural beauty of Iceland. As we mentioned in the previous article, we started our journey from Reykjavik and went south first. In this route you will see tons of waterfalls and beautiful mountains. And when I saw waterfalls, these are nothing like I have seen before.
Skogafoss:
These waterfalls are massive, loud and the water falls with so much power that it sometime leaves you breathless. We decided to be brave and take the DSLR in some of these waterfalls; but others, we just couldn't risk it.
Yes, the weather is a little unpredictable and it can go anywhere from sunny to windy within a couple of minutes. The drive itself was fine but there were spots where the wind picked up so fast and hard that we had to slow down to about 50 kms per hour.
We had originally decided to park for the night wherever we were allowed including people's property (after asking for permission of course), but we realized that we really needed easy access to the toilet and showers. For that reason we decided to set up camp every night at different campsites. Each of these campsites had amazing natural scenery and views and one of the campsites even had a hot tub for us to use. In that same campsite, we also saw the Northern Lights that night (since it was so far away from the city lights).
The Milky Way and Northern Lights from one of the campsites:
There are hot springs everywhere and tons of other landmarks like stacked stone fields that have some sort of folk story integrated with them. One of them is Dimuborgir. Here is the wiki link in case you are wondering what it is. And no, its not the heavy metal band. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimmuborgir. Trolls and elves are a favorite and people actually have tiny troll houses outside their own homes in the hopes that the trolls will leave them alone and stay in the tiny homes. Fascinating!
Hverir:
Near the city of Myvtn we explored this whole field of geo thermal pools called Hverir. They are crazy colored and yes it stinks, but you get used to it pretty quick. We took some really amazing photos and walked around checking out the different pools.
Finally I have to tell you about Vatnajokull National Park. This place is something out of the world. We did a guided glacier walk here and it was a humbling experience. When you experience the mountains and the ice around you; knowing how old and massive they are; its a reminder to respect nature and how in a minute you could be swallowed up by one of the crevasses in the glacier and never be seen again. But I don't want to scare anyone so I will share with you that as clumsy as I am, I did slip and fall in the glacier and made it back out alive.
So there it is! Enjoy some of the pictures and if you like what we post, do follow us! :)
