The Viking Festival in Scotland
The Viking Festival in Scotland is a yearly legendary event in the United Kingdom. It is the absolute ‘Walhalla’ of reenactment entertainment with tens of groups with historical correct costumes, weapons, and ships.

The groups chant loudly warrior songs and the Drakkar, the Viking ship is overwhelming. The festival is a perfect historical excuse for a night of drinking, chanting and more drinking.

The groups of Vikings are called ‘Jarl Squads’ and they are omnipresent the whole day in Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Province; they do represent a realistic invasion force. Finally, they assembled near the waterfront where a Viking ship is victim to the flames when thousands of torches fall on the vessel. After the proud ship burns to a crisp the Vikings march towards City Hall and drinks beer until the sun comes up.

The Viking Festival is a beloved tradition on the Shetland Islands and the invasion really took place in the 8th century, the area was even a Nordic Province until 1472. The colonization left some marks in the islands. It is even a kind of pride to be descendent of the Vikings. Scottish people and Vikings do have one thing in common: they like to party and drink lots; I mean a lot of beer.
