4 Chinese Buddhist Mountains 四佛山

Hi everyone,

today i want to write about the not so famous 4 Buddhist mountains (四佛山) in China. (The 5 Daoist mountains are much more famous, I probably will write about them in another post if you are interested)

If you are still searching for some nice travel destinations in China these mountains will be definitely worth the trip.

Each mountain is a sacred place of one of the 4 important Bodhisattvas where there are many temples and monasteries worshipping them. Each Bodhisattva stands for one of the virtues which you should strive to achieve on the Buddhist path,

The 4 mountains are:

Wutaishan 五臺山

Wutaishan, the northern mountain, is located in the province Shanxi (山西) and is home of the Bodhisattva Wenshu（文殊). Wenshu stands for wisdom.

Putuoshan 普陀山

Putuoshan, the eastern mountain, is located in the province Zhejiang (浙江) and is home to the Bodhisattva Guanyin (觀音), maybe the most famous of all. Guanyin is associated with love and altruism (慈悲), which is like in Christianity one of the most important virtues.

Jiuhuashan 九華山

Jiuhuashan, the southern (or center) mountain, is located in the province Anhui (安徽) and is home to the Bodhisattva Dizangwang（地藏王). He is knows for his vow not to attain Buddhahood until all creatures of the 6 worlds are liberated thus he is conceived as guardian of the deads. The virtues with this Bodhisattva are associated i think with persistency and loyality to your decisions.

Emeishan 峨眉山

Emeishan, the western mountain, is located in the province Sichuan (四川) and is home to the Bodhisattva Puxian (普賢).　Puxian finally is known for his diligent practise so he stands for hard work and effort to achieve your goals.

Honestly I only have been to 2 of them so I can‘t tell you much about the others. :) I have been to Putuoshan and if you happen to be in Shanghai one day it‘s really worth the trip if you want to escape the city, it‘s a beautiful island not far away! I also have been to Emeishan. You can do a daytrip from Chengdu 成都 to visit this sacred mountain and can combine it with a visit at Leshan Dafo 樂山大佛，the highest Buddha statue in the world.
