The history of the cathedral is very interesting. In the twelfth century this place was already a cathedral, and actively visited by parishioners, and known for its size outside of Cologne, than the townspeople were very proud.

This event increased the number of pilgrims so much that a question arose about the construction of a new cathedral.

In 1225 a plan for perestroika was drawn up, and on August 15, 1248 master Gerhard von Riehl began to expand the building.

Since it was decided not to close the cathedral, then for the beginning they decided to demolish only one of the walls. And according to the technologies of that time, stone blocks were chiseled out in the wall, instead of them logs were inserted, which now accounted for the bulk of the weight of the wall. After that, the wall was covered with brushwood and set on fire. The tree, burning through, could not stand the wall and it collapsed.

When everything was ready and the firewood was set on fire, suddenly a strong wind rose and the fire spread to the rest of the building. The old cathedral lit up whole. He could not extinguish it.

After the fire in front of the master Gerhard there were only the charred walls a strong, powerful foundation.

To implement his fantastic idea Gerhard did not have to. It was not possible to see the completed cathedral and many of its followers.

Construction continued for 200 years, when in 1437 the city authorities, because of economic difficulties, decided to stop construction. The unfinished church stood in this form until 1842, when the construction was resumed.

Finally in 1880 the long-suffering cathedral was completed. And now imagine what an impossible task the master Gerhard set himself to - the 157-meter-long building of the cathedral, completed more than 600 years later, became one of the tallest buildings in the world (though only for 4 years).
