The Top 13 Jobs You Can Do Online and Work Abroad

Work While Traveling

By Shameka Banks

More and more people are finding ways to take their jobs with them overseas and on their journeys around the world, from millennials to baby boomers, those days of being shackled to your cubicle is quickly becoming obsolete. In this article I will give you the top jobs you can do online, all you will need to make your travel dreams come true is a tablet or laptop, some decent Wi-Fi and some drive and motivation.

Top Jobs You Can Do Online.

  1. Online Freelance Jobs.

Freelance work can cover a large verity of categories from writing, to social media management, video editing, graphic design, coding, illustration, translating and even virtual assistant but the list goes on and on. Sites like Freelance.com, Fiverr and Upwork are great platforms to start your freelance career and you may even find you qualify for freelance jobs that you never knew existent.

Other Freelance Sites to Check Out Are:

• 99 Designs
• PeoplePerHour
• LinkedIn Profinder
• SimplyHired
• Freelance Writing Gigs

  1. Drop-shipping.

Drop-shipping is an excellent way to make money online. Drop-shipping is basically having an online e-Commerce store without the inventory, so perfect for travelers. You simply research and find a dependable and qualified supplier, create a website, using any of the amazing platforms where you can build your own site, from a simple drag and drop platforms like Weebly or Wix for beginners, to more intermediate sites like Squarespace.com, Shopify or Bigcommerce, to a bit more advanced but highly repeatable platforms like Wordpress.com.

You then upload the images of what you want to sell, you can get the images usually directly from the drop-shipping suppliers of you choosing. You then mark up the original wholesale price and then when someone makes a purchase off of your site you send the shipping info to the suppliers, the supplier then ships of the purchased product, you pay the supplier the wholesale cost and you pocket the rest. Once you have your shiny new website up and running, with the right SEO (search engine optimization) and marketing strategy you can start advertising your site and raking in the coin.

If building a website from scratch sounds a bit intimidating or if you just want a bit of practice first before you make that step or even if you just want to see if drop-shipping is for you before taking the time in building and creating a website, you can also always use Amazon as your e-commerce platform of choice. Many might not know this but somewhere around 70% of Amazon's merchandise is sold by individual suppliers or sellers. Amazon is a great platform if you just want to get your feet wet before going in at it alone. Amazon is already a well established and trusted brand with a fairly good reputation. Consumers trust Amazon, and Amazon gets millions of hits, plenty of traffic and one of the largest online retailers there is, so a great option to start off your drop-shipping career.

A Bit of Advice: But just because you may be using Amazon as your e-commerce platform of choice, doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in the work because there is tons of competition on Amazon, plenty of new and well-established sellers buying for the attention of potential buyers, so you still have to put in the time and the grind to become a profitable and successful drop-shipping business.

One More Thing: Research research research, make sure you do the necessary research to know what sells, Think Long Term, what's trendy at the moment and what will always sell and finding a niche is almost just as important as having a competent website but not too niche where no one is buying or looking for what your selling but niche enough where there aren’t too many competitors.

  1. Blogging and Affiliate marketing.

The reason why I put blogging and Affiliate marketing in the same category because I feel that they both go hand and hand. One of the major ways bloggers make money is through affiliate marketing, by writing an article on a specific repeatable product or service and then receiving a percentage of any sales earned through that recommendation, link or article. Blogging is always a great way to market a website or e-commerce site because of SEO or the keywords that can be integrated into a blog; whether writing is your passion or you're just trying to drive traffic to your own product or services blogging can become vital to making sure your website gets seen.

Let’s say you’re a fitness coach, you have the education, the credentials, the drive and passion for getting others healthy and in shape and you want to start a line of training courses, one of the ways you could market yourself and show your expertise in whatever field your qualified in is by blogging or writing on a verity of topics giving advice, tips or just your point of view. Using the best target keywords as possible, so when potential client go to Google, Yahoo or Bing your website could potentially show up on the first page searched; don’t underestimate the power of blogging.

Travel or lifestyle blogging could go hand and hand while you go out to see the world, you could write about the different experiences you encounter throughout your travels, give travel tips and tricks, advice and reviews on the best places to sleep or eat, the best ways to travel through certain countries, what kind of visa one might need, etc., etc. Now, of course, blogging is a long game and success does not happen overnight, it can take time to really build up a full-time income from blogging but that defiantly doesn’t mean it's impossible.

A Bit of Advice: The trick is, is to be creative, find your voice, your perfect little corner in the blogging world, be factual but be true to yourself, use your own personality as something that makes your blog unique; if your blog is just a replica of everyone else's then why does anyone need to come to you, when there are hundreds just like you. There are tons of blogs out there, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, you just have to put your own personal spin on it, what makes you different from the rest.

Affiliate marketing is one-way bloggers get paid but there are plenty of other resources that potential bloggers could tap into to make a living if you're interested in more details on how bloggers make money just click right here.

In the world of blogging there's also vlogging…it's blogging but with a camera, I’m sure everyone has heard of social sites like YouTube, which is another amazing way to create your own content, again whether being a vlogger is your goal or you just want to market yourself as an expert in whatever field you're in, making daily or weekly content on different topics surrounding your niche or profession can give you the audience you need, the social media proof you need to then drive and direct that audience to your blog, website, e-commerce site, affiliate links, training courses, etc., thus helping you build a sustainable income as you travel around the world and explore new and exciting places.

Affiliate marketing can also go well with vlogging, a lot of tech channels will review or discuss the latest tech gear, from cameras, computers, smartphones, drones, etc., and then offer affiliate links so the viewer can then go purchase the gear that was being discussed in the video, giving you a percentage of any profit made from that affiliate link. There are plenty of affiliate programs out there that you can join, you can find an affiliate program for just about any niche. You can visit affiliated websites or networks that offer a verity of affiliate programs to multiple companies, that you can gain access to by just signing up to that one affiliate site, websites such as CJ Affiliate, ShareASale, Rakuten Affiliate Network and Affiliate Window are all great places to start, or you could just visit individual sites and search and sign up for their affiliate programs, cutting out the middle man. Most companies big or small will offer affiliate programs, you just have to go out and do the research; Amazon being one of the best and biggest affiliate programs you could join.

One of the best things about Amazon’s affiliate program is that it doesn’t really matter if the consumer buys the exact item or items that the link you provided was linked to, for example, let's say you provided a link for yoga pants and your viewer or viewers click on that link and decided to purchase the pants but then they remember they also wanted to purchase a GoPro and a backpack as well before they check out, you will not only get the percentage of the sale for the yoga pants but also for the GoPro and the backpack, you get the affiliate percentage for the total cost of the entire purchase, as long as they initially went onto the Amazon website by clicking on your affiliate link. They don’t even have to buy the item that you were promoting at all, again for example if you were selling yoga pants, and again a viewer clicks on the link you provided but then decide they don’t want to purchase the pants at all but only the GoPro and the backpack you will still receive a percentage of that total sell, again as long as they initially got onto the Amazon site by clicking on your affiliate link...

Now keep in mind these percentages are small and they do vary but with enough traffic and clicks that small percentage can become an even larger check.

Vlogging can be fun and profitable and even though there are tons of YouTube hopefuls out there, fighting for the spotlight, the Travel niche still isn’t terribly saturated. Living your passion and then sharing it with their world sounds like a dream but a dream that can come true but again it takes time and is far from being a get rich quick scheme; expect 6 months to a year before you see any substantial profit from your YouTube channel, if you're just depending on ad revenue. Also if travel is your thing but vlogging or writing about it isn’t there are hundreds of other niches you could go into, but if you want it to someday be profitable you also have to make sure your niche is something that others also will be searching for.

A Bit of Advice: Youtube’s search engine is pretty much identical to googles, so keep that in mind when your thinking of the perfect YouTube channel to create. Write and vlog about what you're passionate about because it takes time to build up a sustainable income, so if you're doing it just for the money or even just for the fame you won't last long, so you have to be interested in what your talking or writing about but just be smart about it. If your niche is too small find a way to make it a bit more mainstream or commercial but at the same time being a small but searchable niche could be a good thing, you could monopolize in that area of expertise, so just do your research, it won't be perfect the first time but time and effort is always the key to success...

  1. Transcribing:

If you’re a fast typer and you have the patience, then transcribing can be a lucrative online career to go into or just a side gig to earn some extra travel coin. Transcribing is basically listening to an audio track or video and typing what you hear. The audio quality and type of audio or video can vary, from a clear crisp interview or discussion between to two people to a muffled debate between a group of people, who all have extremely strong accents and their constantly stuttering over their words and you have to type it all verbatim, it can be a bit frustrating in my humble opinion but if you can get really good at transcribing then the better and higher paying jobs will come your way. There are a variety of sites and platforms where you can find transcribing jobs such as Upwork, Scribie, Freelnace.com, Fiverr, Speechpad, and Mturk.

Speaking of Mturk, Mturk is a Micro freelance site, a platform where individuals, companies, employees or requesters post small micro jobs from surveys to article, review and ad writing, to listening to music clips and giving you general opinion. The pay also varies from pennies, (like literally a penny) to $200 but it all really depends on how many jobs you have completed, your approval rating and how efficient you are in actually getting the jobs because there is a lot of competition. Transcribing is one of the highest paying jobs on the Mturk site, so again if typing what you hear is something you think you could be good at then it might be the perfect job to funds your travels around the world.

  1. Data Entry.

Data entry can be a tedious job but it could also provide a steady income as you travel. You can find data entry jobs that’s a bit sporadic and varied or you can sign up with a specific site or company, sites like Upwork, Freelance.com, DataPlus + and DionData Solutions etc. are all great places start looking.

  1. Online tutoring.

We all know that teaching English overseas is a popular choice amongst many travelers but you don't have to necessarily be in a classroom to do the job, online teaching and tutoring jobs are becoming more in demand, from teaching English using tutoring apps, to more substantial online teaching jobs. Tutoring can vary from different categories, not just English, there's also math, science, music and art and of course the list goes on. Sites like Udemy, Tutorvista, Tutor.com, and Transtutors are always looking for talented tutors, just sign up, follow the necessary steps and stay motivated; whether it becomes a full-time travel gig or some pocket money, online tutoring can be just the job you're looking for to sustain your traveling lifestyle.
