Greetings community! In this opportunity I share with you a great work memory that involves one of the things I enjoy most when traveling: contact with nature.
En la agencia de noticias donde trabajaba me tocaba hacer guardia de vez en cuando los fines de semana y en una de esas guardias me avisaron el sábado antes de terminar mi jornada que al día siguiente me tocaba cubrir la liberación de Tortugas Arrau en Santa María del Orinoco, estado Apure, un lugar de Venezuela que hasta ese momento ni sabía que existía.
At the news agency where I worked, I had to stand guard from time to time on weekends and they told me one Saturday before the end of my day that the next day I had to cover the liberation of Arrau Turtles in Santa María del Orinoco, Apure state, a place in Venezuela that until then I didn't even know existed.
Como reportera he tenido la oportunidad de cubrir todo tipo de pautas informativas, desde política y economía hasta cultura, salud, internacionales, etc., y claro hay temas que te atraen más que otros y a la vez sientes que deberían tener mayor divulgación en los medios de comunicación porque refuerzan valores en la sociedad, como por ejemplo la importancia de la conservación ambiental.
As a reporter I have had the opportunity to cover all kinds of information guidelines, from politics and economics to culture, health, international, etc., and of course there are topics that attract you more than others and at the same time you feel that they should have more disclosure in the media because they reinforce values in society, such as the importance of environmental conservation.
Ese domingo la fotógrafa que asignaron y yo, teníamos que estar antes de las siete de la mañana en la Base Aérea Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, también conocida como La Carlota, que queda en el este de la ciudad de Caracas, la capital de Venezuela. El transporte de la agencia nos pasaría buscando en nuestras casas, esa era la norma para evitar retrasos cuando debíamos estar muy temprano en algún lugar de no tan fácil acceso.
That Sunday, the photographer they assigned and I, had to be before seven in the morning at the Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base, also known as La Carlota, which is in the east of the city of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. The agency's transportation would pick us up at our houses, that was the rule to avoid delays when we had to be very early in a place not so easily accessible.
Llegamos a la Base Aérea y preguntamos por la gente del Ministerio del Ambiente, responsables de este plan de conservación de las Tortugas Arrau, quienes nos estaban esperando para partir en una avioneta de la Guardia Nacional Bolivariana hacia el estado Apure.
We arrived at the Air Base and asked for the people from the Ministry of the Environment, responsible for this conservation plan for the Arrau Turtles, who were waiting for us to leave in a small plane from the Bolivarian National Guard to the Apure state.
Hasta aquel momento nunca había estado en ese aeropuerto ubicado dentro de la ciudad de Caracas y me impresionó la vista que tiene hacia la montaña emblemática de la capital venezolana: el Ávila o Waraira Repano, así que aproveché y tomé algunas fotos.

El vuelo de aproximadamente una hora y media, con impresionantes vistas de los ríos de la región cuando estábamos por aterrizar, nos llevó hasta Puerto Páez, una población ubicada al sur del estado Apure, fronteriza con Colombia.
The flight of approximately an hour and a half, with impressive views of the rivers of the region when we were about to land, took us to Puerto Páez, a town located in the south of the state of Apure, bordering Colombia.
Allí en el aeropuerto había unos carros esperando para llevarnos al embarcadero donde tomamos unas lanchas hasta el poblado de Santa María del Orinoco, lugar de liberación de las Tortugas Arrau.
There at the airport there were some cars waiting to take us to the jetty where we took some boats to the town of Santa María del Orinoco, place of release of the Arrau Turtles.
El viaje en lancha duró unos 45 minutos y el paisaje mientras recorríamos el Orinoco, el río más grande de Venezuela, ¡espectacular!, con unas enormes piedras redondeadas, brillantes y con varios colores que me hicieron sentir en un lugar prehistórico, y lo es, luego investigué que esas rocas pertenecen al Complejo Granítico Amazónico, el cual forma parte del Escudo Guayanés, una de las formaciones más antiguas del planeta con ¡3500 millones de años!
The boat trip lasted about 45 minutes and the landscape while we crossed the Orinoco, the largest river in Venezuela, spectacular!, with huge rounded stones, bright and with various colors that made me feel in a prehistoric place, and it is, then I investigated that these rocks belong to the Amazon Granite Complex, which is part of the Guayana Shield, one of the oldest formations on the planet with 3,500 million years old!
Llegamos a Santa María del Orinoco, población ubicada en las riberas del río Orinoco entre los estados Apure y Bolívar donde se encuentra el Refugio de Fauna Silvestre y Zona Protectora de la Tortuga Arrau y había muchísima gente, ya lista para participar en el acto de liberación de estos reptiles que se realiza desde 1989, siendo el programa de conservación que más años lleva haciéndose en Venezuela.
We arrived at Santa María del Orinoco, a town located on the banks of the Orinoco river between the states of Apure and Bolívar, where the Refuge of Wild Fauna and the Protective Zone of the Arrau Turtle are located and there were many people, ready to participate in the liberation act of these reptiles that has been carried out since 1989, being the conservation program that has been taking place for the longest time in Venezuela.
En esta zona del Orinoco Medio está la población más grande de estos quelonios y también la más estudiada por los científicos.

La comunidad aledaña participa activamente en este programa junto a las instituciones del Estado y ONG (Organizaciones No Gubernamentales). Allí estaban niños y jóvenes con mucho entusiasmo esperando la señal para ayudar a liberar a las 20.000 pequeñas tortuguitas de esta jornada. Cuando fueron puestas en la orilla y empujadas al río presenciamos un espectáculo impresionante de miles de cabecitas moviéndose en el agua y alejándose hacia su nueva vida.
The surrounding community actively participates in this program together with State institutions and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations). There were children and young people with great enthusiasm waiting for the signal to help free the 20,000 little turtles for this day. When they were put on the shore and pushed into the river we witnessed an impressive spectacle of thousands of little heads moving in the water and moving away towards their new life.

La Tortuga Arrau (Podocnemis expansa) o Tortuga gigante del Orinoco es el quelonio de agua dulce de caparazón duro más grande del mundo.

El caparazón de las hembras, que son de mayor tamaño que los machos, puede llegar a medir más de un metro de longitud y alcanzar un peso de más de 60 kg. Su vida transcurre en el agua y sólo sale para poner sus huevos en los bancos de arena y playas que se forman en temporada de sequía.

Allí visité el criadero, la guardería de tortuguillos y los espacios para la educación ambiental de la comunidad, donde las autoridades dieron una charla a los asistentes ese día.

Para poder liberar miles de tortuguitas cada año, los responsables del Programa de Conservación en el Refugio de Fauna Silvestre y Zona Protectora de la Tortuga Arrau rescatan los nidos de estos animales que se encuentren en peligro tanto por la creciente del río Orinoco como por los vendedores ilegales de huevos y los llevan a las guarderías, donde los cuidan hasta que llegan al año de edad y alcanzan un tamaño de unos 14 cm de longitud y 400 gr de peso, ideal para ser liberados en su hábitat y tener más probabilidades de supervivencia al no poder ser consumidos por la mayoría de sus depredadores naturales como los jaguares, aves o caimanes y así llegar a la edad reproductiva que es después de los 15 años.

Arrau Turtles lay their eggs between January and March, depending on their size, each one can lay 25 to more than 150 eggs, which take about two months to hatch. At birth they measure 5 cm and weigh about 25 gr.
En los 31 años que lleva este programa de conservación se han liberado más de un millón de tortugas. Las instituciones involucradas señalan que una de las claves para poder aumentar la población de esta especie es la concientización de las personas, sobre todo las que hacen vida cerca del hábitat de estos reptiles, para así lograr que los protejan porque son parte importante del equilibrio ecológico de la región, el país y el planeta.
In the 31 years that this conservation program has been running, more than a million turtles have been liberated. The institutions involved point out that one of the keys to increasing the population of this species is raising people's awareness, especially those that make life near the habitat of these reptiles, in order to ensure that they protect them because they are an important part of the ecological balance of the region, the country and the planet.
Además de Apure hay 11 zoocriaderos más ubicados en varios estados de Venezuela como Portuguesa, Barinas, Anzoátegui y Amazonas, que trabajan día a día para tratar de ganarle a la extinción.
