Greek islands: Chora - the capital town of Andros island
Today I felt like sharing the images from Chora town, which is the capital of Andros island. The island belongs to the Cyclades island group. In fact, it is the northernmost of Cyclades and is very close to Athens, therefore, it is a popular weekend destination for Athenians. Andros from old times was and still is inhabited by many Greek ship owner families.
Chora town is famous for beautiful architecture, where cycladic houses are mixed with neoclassical mansions. It is a lovely Cycladic town, perhaps one of my favourite. Chora is situated in a small peninsula, therefore it offers beautiful views to the sea and nearby beaches from many places in town as you stroll through the narrow alleys.
Chora has this cozy atmosphere that makes you want to be part of it again and again experiencing the joy of simple everyday errands like the morning walk to the town to buy fresh bread, fruits, vegetables and sweets, greeting local people, seeing the fishermen sell fresh fish, people opening their stores, tavernas and cafes.
There are two beaches on both sides of the town.
The town is on the hill, so many staircases lead down to the sea.
At the tip of the peninsula one of the town squares host Nautical museum, the statue of Unknown Solder and a beautiful stone bridge connecting Andros town to the remains of Venetian castle.
Chora has quite a few interesting museums, foundations and institutes. I visited Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art and Nautical Museum while I was staying in the town.
Entrance to the Museum of Contemporary art.
Municipal theatre in Chora.
Lovely church of St. Thalassini is one of the symbols of Chora.
When I think of Andros town, I always remember the award winning Greek film “Mikra Anglia” (“Little England” ) directed by Pantelis Voulgaris. The action is happening in Andros, Chora town and you can enjoy cinematic views of the island.
I have visited more places on Andros island and I will prepare the post about my favourite ones in one of my upcoming posts!
