The Mystery Spot - Santa Cruz, California

During our recent trip to the USA, we visited a place just outside Santa Cruz, California known as the Mystery Spot. This place was fascinating and bewildering all at the same time. First opened in 1939, this site sits on an area of 3 acres and holds some fascinating gravity defying demonstrations.

Situated inside a tilted cabin that has slid down the hillside at some point, the Mystery Spot is an area that appears to defy gravity. On a perfectly flat surface, water will run uphill and an eight ball does the same.

Inside the cabin there is a large heavy pendulum that is very easy to push towards the centre of the Mystery Spot and much more difficult to push away from the centre of the Mystery Spot.

Illusions of height are also apparent at the site, which could be explained by a trick to your eyes, however the changes in gravity were what bewildered me when we visited.

Suggestions have been proposed to explain the reason behind The Mystery Spot’s odd gravitational rules and illusions. The tour guides suggested that “a meteor which fell in ancient days left an interesting gravitational anomaly". Other theories include a spaceship crashing in the area and that the earth's crust being much thinner changing the gravitational differences.

If you are ever in the area, spend the $8 for the tour and check it out. It is definitely worth a visit, whether you believe in the illusions and anomalies or not.
