Dresden – the capital and royal residence for Kings of Saxony. Destroyed by massive firebombing, devastated by fire but still one of Europ’s greatest art and architectural treasures.

Dresden is having one of the hardest history I have ever heard. Before World War II, Dresden was called “the Florence of the Elbe” and was regarded as one the world’s most beautiful cities for its architecture and museums. But the night of February 13, 1945 changed everything. It was a massive bombing with more than 35 000 killed people. Almost all was destroyed. Only few historic buildings were possible reconstructed out of the rubble. Dresdens history is heartbreaking. But i will not lie, Dresden is still one of the most beautiful cities.

One big plus for Dresden is ‘’compactness’’. Yes, all the most beautiful buildings, parks and views you can find in Old Dresden. You don’t need to rent a car, buy a public transport ticket or even rent a bike. Everything is realy around you. Just make a few steps to the right, few steps to the left and you will find all Dresdens architectural treasures.

Here is a list with my TOP 9 places, you need to visit in Dresden:

Royal Palace – one of the oldest buildings in Desden, Germany. First mentioned in the 14th century as a castle complex. For almost 400 years, it was the residence for kings and queens of Saxony. Almost destroyed by fire in 1701 and then in World War II.

Zwinger Palace – famous around the world for its beautiful baroque architecture. It was built in 1709 during the reign of Augustus the Strong. The remarkable sculptures adorning the gallery walls are by various artists and help make this one of the main attractions in Saxony’s regional capital.

Theaterplatz Square – from the point of view of the history of architecture the Theaterplatz is the most important square of Dresden. It is surrounded by the most beautiful and baroque style richest buildings.

Semper Opera House – the most famous opera house in Germany; it houses the Saxon State Orchestra, one of the world’s oldest and best-known orchestras. Built by Gottfried Semper between 1838 and 1841.

The Bruehls Terrace – also known as ”The Balcony of Europe”, a unique place with amazing Elbe river and Dresden’s city view.

Procession of Princes – 102-meter-long mural applied to 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles. The mural displays portraits of 35 members of the House of Wettin, who were rulers of Saxony between 1127 and 1904.

Katolische Hofkirche (Dresden Cathedral) – built between 1738 and 1751 in high Baroque style. The church is framed with balustrades from which seventy-eight statues of historical and biblical figures look out over the city. Each of these statues is about three meters tall.

”Canaletto view” – skyline with Hofkirche, Frauenkirche and other buildigs from the banks of the River Elbe. But the name “Canaletto view” actually comes from a very famous painting by Canaletto which is exhibited in the picture gallery “Gemäldegallerie Alte Meister”, situated nearby.

Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) – perhaps Dresden’s most famous landmark and the image of it in ruins is known worldwide as a symbol of the destruction of World War II. A beautiful building and memorial in one: the Church of Our Lady is more than just a house of God, it’s a symbol of peace.
