History Of Reykjavik

Ingólfur Arnarson, a Norwegian absconder, became the 1st official Icelander in AD 871. Legend has it that he tossed his high seat pillars (öndvegissúlur) overboard, settling where the gods washed them on to the shore. This was at Reykjavík , which he named after steam rising from geothermal vents. According to 12th century origins, Ingólfur built his farm on Aðalstræti, and excavations have disentomb a Viking longhouse there.
