Mexico City, Mexico Mission Trip

in #travel6 years ago

Hello fellow Steemians! I hope you all had a splendid Memorial Day weekend!
My wife and I spent ours in Mexico City with our church on a Missions Trip. This wasn't your traditional missions trip where you hit the streets and spread the great news about Jesus. This was more of a work trip. We partner with a Lutheran Church of the Mexican Synod, called Inglesia Luterana El Buen Pastor, and they needed some bodies and hands to help update the church. There are many updates that needed to be done, but we were only there for the weekend. We had two full days to accomplish as much as we could.

We decided we would focus our attention on scraping all the old paint in the basement and up the spiral stair case leading to the church's main entrance. From 7am until around 5pm our team of 12 people worked diligently. The work was tough on everyone's muscles and joints, not to mention our lungs were not used to being at an elevation of over 7,000 ft! After two days we had accomplished our goals and the basement and stair well looked amazing!

The church pastor, Pastor Schlund, is a Michigan native and now speaks fluent Spanish. Beside him the rest of the congregation spoke little to no English and our team spoke very little Spanish. However, the language barrier was not a road block in noticing appreciation and gratefulness. The smiles, hugs and meals made for us by their members were more than enough to know our trip was worth it. We take for granted the financial means our local church has access to and the large congregation we have. The church in Mexico would take years to amass the amount of money our church could raise in one night fundraising. Although I think, from an economical standpoint, we could have easily just sent money down to accomplish all of their goals being there and showing that we are invested in them was worth it in the end.

We spent Sunday going to church and they through a little luncheon afterwords thanking us, but also celebrating the church's 70th anniversary.

Mexico City was a great experience and I am glad my wife and I decided to join our church on this mission. It is rewarding to give back and help when needed, but at the end of the day its about doing God's work and that is exactly what we did!

I hope you enjoyed this post.
