Rosh Hanikra - Tourist Destination
Rosh Hanikra - rocky cape on the Mediterranean coast at the border with Lebanon. Under the cliff there are clefts and grottoes, washed by the sea and partially filled with water.
On the ridge of Rosh ha-Nikra located the border between Israel and Lebanon, and at the top there is a border point and a road connecting the two countries.
For many centuries, from the northern Mediterranean, Syria and Lebanon through Rosh ha-Nikra, trade caravans, armies and pilgrims traveled to Egypt and to Africa.
In the region of the Lebanese border, the mountains come close to the sea and plummet straight down, exposing the white limestone rock. White rock is visible for 40 km, even from Haifa.
The border with Lebanon formally passes along the ridge of the mountain, but in fact on the other side of the fence along the entire border line there are more than 6,000 UN observers, and the Lebanese authorities themselves are only 10-15 km north of the border.
Since the day of Israel's formation, this border was nothing but a line of fire. Between Israel and Lebanon there is not a single functioning checkpoint, and no one tourist has crossed the border since 1948. Rosh-Hanikra is commonly called the "border" and this place even turned into a local landmark, where families come to rest and are photographed against the background of the "Beirut - 120 km" sign.
The Israeli fathers of the families tell the children how they visited the neighboring state on tanks in their early youth. And it is necessary to add with hope that, perhaps, someday it will be possible to visit there and as a tourist.
Grottoes
The top layer of the Roche a-Nikra cliff consists of solid chalk of dolomites.
The middle layer - from the vortex and the soft chalk: in this layer of the rock sea waves and winds managed to form the famous gorges - the grottoes of Rosh Hanikra, as well as huge natural sculptures, among which known as the "Elephant Leg" and others.
The lower layer consists of a hard chalky rock and is mostly under water.
