Flooded in Hoi An (4.11.2017-7.11.2017)

in #travel7 years ago

When I arrived in Hoi An there was already very heavy rain. It continued for 3 days almost all day long with a few hours break in between. On the second day the water level rose so high that the ground floor of my hotel was flooded. Inside the water rose to about 70cm and on the street to about 120cm. A cab which was ordered there got stuck. With the help of a few locals the taxi driver managed to push his car out.

This was the one and only picture I took since my phone got wet and didn't work until 20 minutes before I left the city on a night bus.

However the first day was kind of nice. I explored the old town a little. Unfortunately I didn't have any time to see the night market. I didn't go on that day because of the heavy rain and afterwards it was flooded. I can't even imagine how high the water must have been there since it was right next to the river.

The Japanese bridge, build by the Japanese in the early 17th century to connect with the local people for the sake of doing business.

Inside the Chapel of the Nguyen family. It was build over 200 years ago. What impressed me about it was it's simplicity. It seemed genuine without the need to impress.

Inside the former Chinese Assembly Hall in Hoi An. I love sculptures of Dragons. In the Chinese and Vietnamese tradition they represent power, nobleness and luck.

Still in the Assembly Hall. The janitor there didn't speak any English, but he seemed to be a very kind and well meaning person. He turned on the lights for me in another room. He couldn't write in English, but he copied the letters on the sign on the table to remind people to take off their raincoats.

I also saw an amazing water puppet show. It was made with much effort and love. They told stories about normal life, romance, comedies and adventures. A few minutes before my phone broke down so I couldn't take any pictures, but I can strongly recommend it to anyone traveling to Hoi An.

In the evening of the 7th of November I took a night bus to Nha Trang. The travel was not so comfortable, but it was much better then driving onMotorbike through heavy rain.
