First week in Phnom Penh

in #travel7 years ago

One week has passed and every day was eventfull. From arriving at the hotel in a room on the top floor without AC that felt like a Sauna to going to another hotel where the room had a hole in the roof which lead Idk where back to the first hotel to another room for midgets(I have to duck a lot).
The sun is shining and it usually has around 20-30 degrees. The real heat is going to come in a few months. Today was the first day where it rained for about half an hour very strong then stopped. This will happen almost every day. Raining season is comming.
Phnom Penh is the Capital of Cambodia. The Mekong river is passing through the city and you can have a beautiful walk on the riverside.

On my first day I met some children on the street. They were playing a game where you kick your shoe to hit some money and the winner gets it. I played with them for 2 rounds and lost. I learned a new game and had some ideas about how to playfully teach.

I also met a Vietnamese war Veteran from Australia. He told me a lot about what was going on during the war. The orders he had to execute and the things he has done that he wants to forget. Some very horrible stories. Killing innocent people, burning villages... He seemed very sad and has some very strange ideas about war and the right reason to kill. It is hard not to judge him for some things, but the things he has been through must have had a lot to do with that.

The city is nice, but quite dirty in many places. They have many monuments on the street. I like them a lot.

Today I visited monastry. It was very different from China and Vietnam.

What is very similar to China and Vietnam is that very few people here speak at least OK English. This is the ideal country to start my teaching career.

Many more intense and exciting things happened, but telling all the stories takes too long.
